Parker native, Colorado youth hockey grad Gomez inks first pro deal with FPHL’s Prowlers
The FPHL’s Port Huron Prowlers have signed rookie forward Alex Gomez.
Last season was Gomez’s only campaign at NCAA Division III Utica. He registered three assists in 14 games as part of a team that won the UCHC title.
“We’re very excited to bring Alex to Port Huron,” said Prowlers associate head coach Chris Paulin. “We got to know Alex very well recruiting him last season and he has the mentality, perseverance, and drive that will translate to success in professional hockey. We expect Alex to have an immediate impact, not only on the ice, but also in furthering the culture we have developed here in Port Huron. The sky is the limit for him and we can’t wait to get started.”
Before transferring to Utica, the Parker native spent three years at NCAA D-I Alaska-Anchorage. There, he appeared in 64 games over three seasons and picked up three goals and 13 points.
Back home, Gomez played for the Arvada Hockey Association, Evolution, DU Jr. Pioneers, Hyland Hills Jaguars, Colorado Rampage and Colorado Thunderbirds.
Truth be told, Gomez was born to be a hockey player.
Literally.
“A fun story about my name is when my mom was pregnant, they couldn’t decide on a middle name – they already had Alexander picked out as my first name,” said Gomez. “While at the Stanley Cup Final Game 7 at the Pepsi Center in 2001, they decided who ever scored the game-winning goal, that would be my middle name. Well, Alex Tanguay scored the game-winner, so Alexander Alex didn’t work.
“Then when Joe Sakic handed the Stanley Cup to Raymond Bourque, with all the emotion in the arena, they just looked at each other and said ‘Raymond,’ hence Alexander Raymond Gomez.”
Gomez also helped assist and coach the Colorado Avalanche Youth Sled Hockey Team from when he was nine years old through high school and said he “was very fortunate to get to know the amazing kids.”
