Glenwood Springs’ Weatherred taking giant development step with EHL’s Bears

Jett Weatherred entertained an offer this past summer to head east and play junior hockey in the EHL for the New Jersey Bears.

Accepting the offer has paid immediate dividends for the Glenwood Springs native, who spent the 2024-25 season with the NA3HL’s Texas RoadRunners.

“I think what appealed to me the most was just the opportunity to possibly get called up and the community and just how great the team is,” Weatherred said. “I’m just looking forward to having a great time here and pushing far into the playoffs and hopefully playing for the ‘ship.

“Just from playing last year in the NA3HL, that season taught me I had to get more tough and just be fast and better and with that, I knew bringing that hard working, grinding mentality and skill would help the team and help everyone get better.”

Back home, Weatherred became enamored almost immediately after touching the ice for the first time.

“My dad always loved hockey and I take my love of hockey after him,” said Weatherred. “So when my dad signed me up for the Glenwood Springs Grizzlies at the ripe age of five, I believe I fell in love with the game. The NHL did play a big role because I thought just watching these guys who where the best of the best, I just loved the speed and everything with it.”

Along with the Grizzlies, Weatherred played high school hockey for the Glenwood Springs Demons.

“My high school coach Tim Cota was really a positive influences to me because he helped me grow and helped me get ready for juniors or whatever I was going to do after high school,” said Weatherred. “Last season was fun I had a good time leaving the house for the first time and learning how to live by myself with roommates and all that. Also learning that juniors is a business and how it’s your job to be here and show up each and every day, that helped going into this new season with confidence and high hopes that I can help out my new team.”

Looking ahead, Weatherred is working towards playing at higher levels of hockey.

“My long-term goal is to be able to play hockey at a college level, whether that’s ACHA, AAU or even NCAA,” Weatherred said. “I hope to have this game in my life for a long time.”
